Description in English:
The first edition of a major work by a renowned Czech historian and writer Jan Florian Hammerschmidt (1652-1735); the book deals with the history of Prague churches, chapels and palaces, as well as the history of Prague Castle and the Charles University. The copy lacks an etching in the frontispiece (Hammerschmidt's portrait surrounded by angels and allegorical depiction of the Vltava river; made by Michael Heinrich Rentz and Johann Daniel de Montalegre after a drawing by Jan Hiebel). However, the copy contains a head-piece with a portrait of John of Nepomuk, two initials and several tail-pieces. An index and a leave with errata are also included in the volume. The full subtitle reads as follows: "Continens Urbium Pragenarum Fundationes, Pragensium a Fide Christi suscepta Religionis Catholicae Fervores, pro Fide Christiana perpessa Martyria, Fidei Christianae Propagationem, Ecclesiarum Pragae Erectiones, Monasteriorum Fundationes, Xenodochiorum Dotationes, Castri Pragensis, et Wissehradensis Descriptiones, Archi-Episcoporum Pragensium Titulos, Divitias, Potentiam, Ditiones, Bona, Dignitates, et Nobilitates, Nobilium Domos et Palatia, Universitatis Carolinae Magnificentiam, Regum, et Imperatorum erga illam Amores, Privilegiorum Confimationes, Tri-Urbis Curiarum, Pontis, et Turrium Descipriones, Pragensium in Bello fortitudinem, erga Reges suos Fidelitatem, a Ducibus, Regibus, et Romanorum Imperatoribus, illis concessas innumeras Immunitates, Libertates, Gratias, Donationes, Indulta, Privilegia, et Jura, Ludos publicos Pragae editos et celebratos, ab Elementis pressiones, sed nunquam depressiones, Pragensis aëris salubritatem, Pragensium olim Divitias et Bona, Magnatum Pragae Officia, et Nomina, Comitia, Tabularum Regni notitiam [et]c." /// Cardboard slipcase coated with cloth and marbled paper (much later than copy); leather binding with raised bands and gilt title (much later than copy); hardback, [18], 816, [14] pp., 4° (23 x 34,5 cm); slipcase and cover with barely visible traces of wear; new bookplate on front endpaper; endpapers yellowed; pages tanned (see photos for common condition of pages); title page cropped, small stripe of paper is missing; owner's signature and marginalia written with pen on title page; one leave is skilfully fixed with piece of paper (see photo); corner of the first page is torn away (see photo); very rare pen marginalia on pages; condition: very good
