‘The Trespasser’ was Lawrence’s second novel, published in May 1912 and is based on the true story of Helen Corke and Herbert Macartney. Surprisingly, Helen Corke made no objection to the publishing of the story — Lawrence even calls his heroin Helena. Lawrence later took up with Helen Corke and began to share her ‘artiness’ and love of Wagner which infuses ‘The Trespasser’. The two main criticisms which have been levelled at the novel are its ‘artiness’ and florid prose and the lack of any real sexuality either heterosexual or lesbian. It is all hinted at and skirted round rather than given the expression which was to come in Lawrence’s later work. If ‘The Trespasser’ is to be read now it is for the exquisite descriptions of nature and the hard writing describing the hero’s life at home when he returns from his elicit holiday.
